Lesson 6 · 11 min
The Impossible Pair
Two coins that always agree — without either one deciding first.
Make two magic coins together in the right way and something impossible happens. Look at one and it picks at random. Look at the other and it always matches. Every single time, however far apart they are.
- Neither coin decided in advance. If they had, you could open one, and the answer would have been sitting there all along.
- It is not a message. The first coin still picks at random, so you cannot send anything by choosing what you get.
- You cannot describe one coin on its own any more. The pair has a description; the halves do not.
- Einstein hated this and called it spooky. He was right that it is strange, and wrong that it does not happen.
